I can't believe it's actually happening.

It still feels as though the rugs could get pulled out from under you, doesn't it?

I'm already starting to get, I told you last time, starting to get the night sweats, starting

to worry about camping.

Oh, I do it every year.

What do you get the night sweats for?

I told you, I just start thinking about all that walking, that camping.

I don't camp like Taco every week.

This is a new thing for me.

Yeah, Taco, you literally do this every week.

This has become, you went to Bonnaroo once and then bought a bus and then you've been

camping ever since.

Well it's backwards because I bought the bus first, but yeah, I'm ready.

I'm already here in Manchester.

Where are you guys?

See, he's prepared for this.

You would.

By the way, I do feel as though, we know Barry's going to just stay in the basement for the

end of time.

I don't know where I'm going to eventually end up, probably New Orleans, but we all,

I think, can all assume that Lord Taco's final resting place will be at the Manchester Walmart

parking lot.

There is no place on this planet where you feel more like yourself, is there?

No, that's correct.

Yeah, I can't wait.

That's what I'm most excited about.

As long as he's in the bus.

The man literally could live in the Walmart parking lot in Manchester for the rest of

time and be totally okay with it.

Yeah, I may never leave.

The rain doesn't bother him, the heat doesn't bother him, the crowd, none of it bothers

him.

The porta-pot is unprepared.

Yeah, he's used to it.

One of our former camp mates at Camp Nut Butter, his name is Joe, he came up with this really

clever thing that Thursday, my thing is always don't go hard on Thursday because you have

to set yourself up for a marathon here and you really don't want to wake up Friday not

feeling your absolute 100% best.

He always said about Friday, Friday was everybody's best t-shirt day.

Friday everybody brings out their absolute best t-shirts.

So in honor of best t-shirt Friday, I thought that I would show you guys what would have

been my Friday t-shirt.

Had I been, had I go, had I, what am I saying?

If I were to have gone to Bonnaroo this year, but I will bring it out next year when I come

back, but here you go.

I used to be really proud of that, and then I think I saw a reflection in a window or

something and I looked like just that old fat guy in a tie-dye that says, comic books.

You look like you work in a magic store.

It's not quite the hip, cool look that I thought it was.

Yeah, I saw the Grateful Dead before they were the Grateful Dead.

They were still living.

I'm that guy.

They were still the Grateful Alive.

You guys don't know anything I know.

Look at these kids.

That's what I look like.

I haven't worn it since, pretty much.

I don't know, man.

Didn't go at all like I thought.

You've popped over at my house to do some housework in that shirt before.

Yeah, that's because I'm crawling under a basement doing plumbing work or whatever it

is you have me doing.

So I wonder what your best t-shirt is.

I don't know.

I'm going to have to figure it out.

So my other good t-shirt is my throwback Hill Street Blues crew t-shirt that they gave.

Yeah, that's always a big contender.

But on Saturdays, I have to wear the same shirt because there's a camp mate, Mike Dewar,

with us who is a fellow Mets fan.

And so every year we have to wear our Mets gear on Saturday.

It's just a rule.

So Friday best shirt, Saturday Mets shirt, and then Sunday it's just trying to survive

the heat.

I do have a Beetle shirt that I'm fond of that actually was found on the grounds of

Bonnaroo.

Our camp mate Denson found it and gave it to me.

You found a shirt on the ground at Bonnaroo and you wear it?

I find something at Bonnaroo every year.

Oh, it's been cleaned.

I wouldn't put it on my body.

It's been cleaned several times.

Oh, come on, Barry.

Yeah, yeah.

He didn't tell you exactly where he found it.

What if he found it?

What if he found it at the porta potty?

He wrung it out and handed it to you.

Yeah.

Somebody was already wearing it when he found it.

He just took it off somebody.

I found this.

Yeah.

Just because you find something at Bonnaroo doesn't mean you should incorporate it into

your life.

I mean, I've always said like there's I always went like in those early days, it was such

a free for all.

I swear to God, there was my first year there was a car on fire and people were just like,

man, that's fine.

I was convinced after that first year that somebody was going to run at me and throw

me a baby.

And I would have just been stuck with this Bonnaroo baby walking around.

And I guess I guess this is mine now because that's how absolute bat shit crazy Bonnaroo

was those first few years.

And, you know, I don't know if it's still like this, but that what did they call what

do they call that row where you walk where you're walking in where everybody's selling

stuff to you?

Shakedown Street.

Shakedown Street.

I don't know if it's as bad as it is the first year.

But my God, I mean, you'd have a guy selling a dryer door out there, you know, shoestrings

here, the dollar.

I mean, and they were never part of the festival.

They were just, you know, hangers on from from Manchester.

And it was like, I mean, I know what the Bonnaroo code is now, but in year two, it did not feel

that safe.

I'll be totally honest with you.

It sort of it sort of felt like walking to the train stop here in New York at about three,

four o'clock in the morning.

It was not sort of where I wanted to be.

I guess it was the third or fourth year I went.

The big rumor was that they were going to that people were going to be dosing you.

They were going to spray.

That's right.

I did hear that.

Yeah, we're going to get dosed.

That was a thing.

And then I do know one year we went.

Me and the photographer went out into G.A. and they had the like the big yarn art display,

whatever, where people could rearrange it.

And this was like two in the afternoon and a couple of people came up and offered us

PCP and we were like, no, we're working.

And the disappointment on this kid's face was unbelievable.

It wasn't that we weren't going to take it.

He was like, man, that would suck if my job prevented me from doing this.

Yeah.

And we were like, have a good time.

See you.

I don't want I don't want PCP.

I want PBR.

But I'll just never forget his face.

He was like, that would be awful.

Well, I mean, I've told this story on I've told this story on the podcast before.

But you know, that car that I saw on fire was was the night that broke me.

And I said, I'm never coming back to Bonnaroo.

It was it was right before this tremendous thunderstorm that just took over the entire

festival.

And and it was the night before it.

And I had gotten lost on the way back.

And before they didn't have flags.

They didn't have like organization to get you back home.

You had to go in a direction and cross your fingers that you were going in the right way.

And there weren't lights.

You know, the only light that you got was from somebody's car or, you know, somebody

brought a camp light.

There was there's just there was no organization as a free for all.

So hope that you crawled into the right blue tent.

That's right.

Yeah.

And so you took you took the wrong turn.

And because there was no organization, you could be walking for hours until you realize

that you're going in the wrong direction.

And so we took a wrong turn really early on in getting back to camp.

And I started looking around and like something just doesn't feel right.

There was a car on fire on the right, a double decker bus thing on the left with a guy peeing

off the top of it onto I think someone's tent.

The car on fire was to my right.

And then a completely naked girl comes running up to me, grabs me by the neck and slinkies

down my body screaming PCP crashes down at my foot.

And I literally have to kick her off of me.

And at that moment, me and my buddy, dude, we looked at each other like we got to get

the hell out of here.

We got to get the hell out of here.

It was.

And then the rain came the next night and we were like, I we we felt trapped.

I've just never felt so hopeless in my life.

And you know, the rain stuck us into mud like we could not get out.

We had to pay a kid like 20, 40.

I can't remember how much we paid this kid, but it was a lot to pull us out of out of

the mud.

I mean, it was a total free for all.

And you know, it's kind of it's it's kind of refreshing to think about it that way and

see how far it's come.

And you know, the fact that they have running water now, we talk about it all the time and

I know it's nerding out.

But man, guys, they did not have just the basic amenities when we walked in there in

2003.

They had none of this stuff.

Makes you nostalgic for it, doesn't it?

I mean, no, it doesn't at all.

No, it doesn't.

There's nothing about that that I miss.

A lot of people.

Yeah, I wonder.

I wonder where that I wonder where that girl is now.

She running somewhere.

I'm sure I'm sure Bryan Stone's data.

So the other thing, too, is those first years like you had to carry around with you buckets

of bug spray.

The amount of mosquitoes and bugs was just astronomical.

And what do you see now?

Yeah, they not a single bug.

If you've never been to Bonnaroo or if you haven't thought about this before, just just

take in your surroundings.

You are in the middle of a field and you don't see a bug.

You don't hear a cricket.

You I mean, one year we saw a raccoon and that's because we're in the woods behind the

main stage.

There's a reason for that.

They didn't just magically find the one field in America that is totally bug free.

Now, they sprayed this thing down so heavy duty so that they don't have any sort of bug

problems anymore, because those first few years you I was eaten alive.

I think I had I had fire ants in my tent.

I had spiders everywhere.

There were, you know, roaches and and oh, God, mosquito bites covering me from head

to toe.

I never got all that.

I've seen like two bugs in that one skunk.

And that poor guy woke up in the morning all by himself.

And then all of a sudden, 80,000 people were knocking on his door.

So yeah, no, you and I have commented many, many times.

Whatever they do with the bugs, they got it figured out.

Yeah, I mean, there was a time where like when we first started camping with the first

part, the first half of the group before Barry got there with with Denson and Dewar, I mean,

I was legitimately scared of snakes where we were camping because I mean, our buddy

Denson literally found one one day while he was setting up his camp.

He's found a snake.

I'm like, this is this doesn't happen anymore.

And if you so there's a couple of things that I have just deathly fears of.

And one of them, I can't even say it out loud.

It panics me so much.

But when that bug gets on you and you find it and it burrows its stupid head into your

body to kill you and give you diseases, those things don't even exist anymore.

So, you know, I think I think I found one of those in 16 years.

You think about ticks or chiggers?

God, the chiggers.

Yeah, that was a big deal.

I forgot about that.

I forgot about that.

They had a whole like tents set up to help get those things out of people.

That's right.

I forgot.

That was a big, big deal for the first several years.

Yeah, those little red chiggers.

Oh, OK.

Let's just say that.

Yeah, there you go, waxing poetic for days, days gone by.

Taco, this is this is you miss all this, huh?

I know.

I wish we could go back.

Do you?

You really wish you did?

That's camping, man.

That's camping, isn't it?

Yeah.

And then like all of these all these things happen.

And then, you know, this idiot brings like carpet and vacuum cleaners and, you know,

couches and tents.

And people wonder like, why would you ever do this?

Why would you ever?

Right.

There's a reason.

It's it's it's it was hideous.

It was unlivable for a while.

And I wanted to keep coming back.

So we had to figure out a way to make this so much more fun.

And now, you know, they sort of they sort of did it for you.

You don't really have to put forth that much effort anymore.

Absolutely.

See, look, I can be positive about Boderu.

I'm not always a Debbie Downer.

Yeah, you know, you got a little you got taken to task for our last episode, but you didn't

say anything that wasn't necessarily true.

Hey, I think that if we weren't fair, you would look at us like we were just total doofus

homers, you know, every now and then you got it.

You got to be fair about it.

And you know, what's fair?

It's not the lineups not for me this year.

It's not the reason why I'm not going.

But it's not for me.

I'll be back next year and they will they will probably have a incredible lineup next

year or it's these things go in cycles.

Just two years ago, we were talking about the greatest Bonnaroo lineup ever exists.

They still have their fastball.

They'll be fine.

And you mentioned him a minute ago.

But, you know, after we saw the comments about last our last show and people sort of taking

you to task for being negative.

Yeah, the one time I sign on to Reddit, I see, you know, the nonsense.

And I came up with a brilliant solution.

We went and found one person more curmudgeoning than you to be a guest and he couldn't make

it this week.

So maybe we'll have him on next week.

And that's that's our own Bryan Stone.

We were going to have him on.

Oh, yeah.

Wait, wait till they get a load of Bryan Stone.

That guy hates sunshine, babies, puppies.

Yeah, it is incredible.

And by the way, I kind of take offense that you would just describe me as a curmudgeon

like Bryan Stone.

There is not a thing that we have in common.

That was the point.

But go ahead and tell people why he's not on with us this morning.

What is what is so important in his world that he couldn't join us to talk about this

year's schedule?

And he will be with us in Camp Nut Butter, by the way.

Yeah, the man is a massive Atlanta Braves fan.

Even the Braves don't bring him joy.

Like he still hates the Braves, even when they're winning the World Series.

This stupid team.

I hate it.

They're going to go wrong.

Yeah, I know.

They're going to ring away from him.

Even to this day.

So he lives in Chattanooga and he could at any moment take the hour and 15 minute drive

down to whatever the ballpark in Atlanta is called now and see the World Series trophy.

You know, here in New York, I'm a Mets fan.

You can go to you can go to Citi Field to the Mets Hall of Fame and walk in and see

our two trophies.

If you really want to see history, you can walk right there to the ballpark and see the

trophies, just like you can in Atlanta.

How many games does he go to a year?

Five, six, seven.

He could walk in and see the World Series trophy any day.

But no, he today could not join us because the World Series trophy from the Atlanta Braves

World Series Championship last year has made its trek to Chattanooga and he has got to

drive down and see the World Series trophy.

He left us for hardware, Barry.

He left us for hardware.

He couldn't go when it was at the Burpees, I guess, last week.

Oh, the Buc-E's.

Yeah, he missed it.

But when it came to Chattanooga, damn, and I'm not missing that.

I miss it.

I've been on his calendar with a big crayon and he will still bitch about it.

Damn thing smaller in real life.

It's not as big as I thought and they wouldn't let me touch it.

I helped earn that thing and I couldn't touch it.

Yeah, he'll find some reason to hate it.

But yeah, that's the reason why he couldn't join us today.

I think Sons of Kemet, if that's the right way to say it, might be one of my new favorites.

I really like that.

They're London based, it's Afro beats and jazz.

I like it a lot, and I really want to see them live.

That's one I'm going to be putting into rotation here at the house.

I understand, but you're missing the lead of this band that you got to see them now

because they're breaking up after this run.

This is their final stretch of shows that they'll ever do together.

I did not know that.

Nice.

I think half of them were in The Comet is Coming, which played I think 2019.

That's kind of what they do.

They'll just form a little band for a little while.

Then you got to see them on the end.

One of them is performing with The Smile, which is Tom Yoran from Radiohead.

Yeah, the wonderful people at Odd Story had given us all of these beers to take to the

craft beer exchange.

And that was very, very nice of them.

They gave us some very highly specialized unreleased stuff that we shared.

No, it was just it was just two different flavors, you know.

So just it was more of a scheduling conflict thing, not like a sound battle thing.

My thing is, you know, Robert Plant, I put him up there and, you know, he's a former

Led Zeppelin.

He's you know, you you see a beetle when you can see a beetle.

You see a Zeppelin guy when you can see and Alison Krauss obviously has the voice.

I have taken Robert Plant totally for granted every time he's on a schedule, every time

he comes to town.

I'm just like, no, I'll see it sometime.

But with all that being said, she's having a real moment.

I mean, she's got a book on the number one New York Times bestseller list.

The album has blown up.

She's having a real, real moment right now, and they think that she is a legit star.

And I mean, I think that she is.

And you know, it's just a matter of time before this band becomes, you know, becomes really,

really.

I mean, they think it's going to be the next Florence and the Machine.

We'll see.

But I like them so much.

I really don't think that there was a better song a few years ago than Roadhead.

And even this last album is great.

I just still can't stop listening to Roadhead.

So I would go just for that.

bit feel a bit better about it.

But I think that that's a can't miss show.

I think that's one of those shows that so going to be specifically great for Bonnaroo.

I saw him at Tipitina's in New Orleans in a small spot.

There's not a show I will ever miss if Nathaniel Ratliff is near me.

And I think he's a perfect in you know, we talk about it on this show a lot.

Perfect Bonnaroo in the field kind of.

That sound feels exactly like Bonnaroo is supposed to feel.

And so, you know, we haven't talked about this and we do it every year.

My favorite time of my entire year is when we get to the top of the mountain driving

from Chattanooga.

We get to the top of the mountain and we start to come down and we see over into the valley

and the sun is pouring through the trees and you get down to the base and it's just open

farmland.

And that's when that feeling just hits me and rushes over me.

And it's legitimately the biggest, it's the best drug that I can take ever.
