The National Guard Armory had been set fire a day or two before,
and so Nixon sent in troops.
I didn't know that Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Caselli
were students at Kent State.
That is what triggered Devo to become Devo.
There's a lot more to Devo than just that one song.
Even if you don't know Devo, you've heard Mark Mothersbaugh
because he's done a ton of scores for movies, TV shows, commercials.
You're like, why are Barry and Russ talking about Devo?
It's because they're going to be at Shakin' Ease in three weeks,
and I can't wait.
All right.
Welcome back to the very, very special edition of The What Podcast.
Very special. Yeah.
It's nice sitting on the porch with you.
Yeah. We, uh, Russ reached out this week and said,
we need to do something special.
How about maybe the World Headquarters?
So I said, let's do it.
Yeah. I mean, we do this every week and obviously Brian's not here.
He's still traveling on his way back from Washington State.
And I just thought, you know, we see each other through screens every week.
Why not just do something in person? Yeah, I love it.
We've done one other show from here that I remember.
We had about everybody. David Bruce was here.
Nick Turner, the designer of all the Camp Nut Butter stuff.
Brad Steiner was here. You were here.
Was that about it? I think so.
I think so. But that was a lot of fun.
So this is going to be an interesting episode for me.
I hope for you.
Interesting. What? Good point.
They're all terrific.
And you should watch all of them, by the way.
We're going to talk a little shaky knees.
We're going to talk a little IBM, W.A.
IBM, a bluegrass festival, which is in Chattanooga.
And for you that are rolling your eyes saying, I don't care about bluegrass.
I get it. But it's going to be kind of a big deal because we got some news.
We did get some news as some special guests.
And yeah, I think even if you don't like bluegrass, this is still a big deal.
Yeah, you've heard of these people.
Steve, Steve, somebody Steve and Billy and Billy.
Steven Billy. Yeah.
Yeah, we're kidding, obviously.
Steve Martin and Allison Brown are going to be the special co-hosts
of the event.
And none other than Billy Strings is going to be here
sometime during the week to present some awards and do a conference speech.
I think so. Not entirely sure.
I mean, they've never done this in Chattanooga.
It's always been in Raleigh.
That's a good point.
We don't exactly know what to expect.
It's the same weekend as shaky knees, unfortunately for us.
But the week leading up, they've got a lot of stuff planned and stuff announced.
So one of them is some type of conference with Billy Strings.
We have press passes.
We have media for both events.
So we will definitely be at both events.
We have to figure out how we're going to cover all of this.
Yeah, not quite sure yet.
We either have to split up or, you know, send some correspondence out.
I don't know. Yeah, we need interns.
That's what we keep talking about. Interns. Yeah, we need interns.
Apply today. We won't pay you, but yeah, there's no pay.
Yeah. Well, I promise you this.
You'll get exactly what we get twice. Yeah.
You'll double it.
I can I can double it. I can guarantee it.
But in a weird turn of events, here's what I want to do.
And Russ, I reached out to you yesterday
and asked you to watch the Devo documentary on Netflix.
Good recommendation. I'm glad you did, because I loved it.
Back in nineteen seventy eight or nineteen eighty, rather.
I had an English teacher, Becky Jordan, who I just adored,
who challenged us as students to bring in a record
as poetry and present it and then talk about it.
And I brought in Devo's Are We Not Men? Nice.
And my and I stumbled, stumbled, bumbled.
I just thought it was so obvious.
And she was like, well, what does this mean?
And I was like, ah, and my good friend, Jeff Hendy,
came to the rescue and said Devo is short for de-evolution.
And then I was I got back on track.
I had actually breakfast with Jeff yesterday.
Wow. To tie this together, he lives in Atlanta now.
He was the best man at my wedding.
But we had breakfast yesterday and we talked about this documentary.
Amazing. In nineteen seventy, May 4th,
four students at Kent State University were shot and killed by National Guardsmen
who had been put in place by Nixon, I believe they would.
Yeah. The National Guard Armory had been set fire a day or two before.
And so Nixon sent in troops.
Well, it was the whole point was protesting the Vietnam War.
Vietnam War. Correct.
It was a he. I was six.
But I remember it vaguely being a big deal.
Later in the early 1980s, Kent State
movie was made for television and it became a big deal again.
So you had when it happened.
And probably many of you have seen this documentary with Neil Young.
He saw the same thing everybody else did the next day, the headlines.
And like in 20 minutes wrote Ohio.
Yeah. And as legend goes, he walked in and showed it to David Crosby, I think.
And David Crosby called Graham Nash and said, I've just booked the studio.
Get down here now.
And they recorded that song, Ohio, in like that day. Yeah.
Rolling Stone has named it like number nine as one of the best songs ever written.
Yeah, you've heard it.
If it's not ten soldiers and Nixon's common for that in Ohio.
Yeah, you heard it.
A year later, the Beach Boys did student demonstration time.
So it was a big deal.
It was it was unfathomable at the time that United States
soldiers would turn on its own citizens.
Yeah. Students, no less.
Students, no less.
You all seen that picture, the unbelievable picture.
Well, I didn't know this, even though I did a class project on Devo.
I didn't know that Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry
Caselli were students at Kent State.
That is what triggered Devo to become Devo.
Yeah. And it was one of their friends that was two.
They knew two of them. Yeah, they were shot and killed.
Yeah. And so why?
Why are Barry and Russ talking about this?
Because Devo is going to be at Shakinies.
That's right. In a couple of three weeks.
That's one of the ones I'm really excited about.
I'm super excited. I would get to see Devo.
I didn't even know they were still doing stuff.
I looked it up.
You know, their drummer passed away, which you saw in the documentary.
And one of the Bobs and one of the Bobs.
Yeah. Yeah. And Josh Friess has been their drummer.
You know, session tour drummer for a long time.
So but it was if I highly recommend you guys watch that documentary
because it's well, like I said, I didn't realize the whole Kent State connection.
Yeah, I didn't.
I really didn't know a whole lot about Devo other than Whip It,
you know, which is, of course, what everyone knows.
And, you know, you just think it's a silly one hit.
Well, there's a lot more to Devo than just that one song.
Yeah, there's a lot. And they were they were very much
they were very much an art band, but they were also very much.
What's the word?
A protein, I guess, protest. Yeah. Yeah.
Those songs are silly and intentionally silly.
If that's the right word, that probably would insult them.
But they were very intentional and they were very,
very much a commentary on society. Yeah.
Yeah. It was like if you became either loved or you hated it.
Most people hated it because they didn't get it.
But if you were in on the joke, which thrilled them to death.
Yes, they love that.
They talked about how much they loved, you know, all these people that didn't get it.
They love getting boot off stage.
But if you were in on the joke and you could figure out what they're saying,
you loved it. You were a fan. Right.
And I don't know. It just timing is so strange because it
it struck me because it took me back, obviously.
But also it just sort of made me think, you know, is there are there
bands and music today that are making commentaries on
political sort of commentaries on society?
I know there's a lot of commentary on mental health and internal kind of stuff.
Yeah. But I can think of I can't think of any.
I know I'm putting you on the spot. Yeah.
Well, if there are, they're certainly not signed to a major label,
which was part of what Devo kind of intended to do.
They wanted to subvert culture.
And part of that was, well, we got to get signed to a record label and,
you know, put out albums and be a mainstream band.
That's, you know, Chumbawumba comes to mind as another one.
That's kind of like that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
And they also had their one hit that everybody thinks is just a fun party song.
And there have been there are those and there there's some that started
years ago and that are still doing it.
Yeah. I can't think of any current. Yeah.
That's kind of my and I don't know what a greater point that I'm trying to make
other than and I'm going to say this and then move on.
We now have National Guard's people.
On the grounds in certain cities in our country again, so. Yeah.
The timing is timing is interesting.
Yeah. God forbid something like Kent State happens again.
Because if you were too young, you wouldn't remember.
The other part of that was, like I said, no one thought it could happen.
But the other side of it was there was a large part of the population
who thought good. They deserved it.
Yeah. That the students brought it on themselves,
which is stunning to think about.
But it was a major shift in society
and the war.
So I mean, it's a big deal.
And I just really had no idea that Devo.
Yeah. Was part of that.
Yeah, I didn't either.
And you you probably did know
pop culture fans, Mark Mothersbaugh, again, the leads
half of the lead singers became a producer and songwriter for.
That's what I wanted to mention is even if you don't know Devo,
you've heard Mark Mothersbaugh because he's done a ton of scores for movies,
TV shows, commercials.
You know, he's was it Spongebob?
Didn't he do Rugrats Rugrats?
There you go. Yeah.
Was a big cartoon that he did.
He worked with Wes Anderson a lot to do a lot of soundtracks for his movies.
It's it's amazing.
Yeah. So it tie in that whole circle.
That's kind of why I wanted to do.
Yes. Yeah. Good.
And again, you're you're you're looking at it.
You're like, why are Barry and Russ talking about Devo as well?
Because they're going to be at Shaking Ease.
Yeah. In three weeks.
And I can't wait.
I'm so excited to see to see.
So do we want to talk about what else is coming?
Yeah, because you're going to go you're going down all three.
I'm trying to figure out which days I'm going and which days
I'm going to the IBM thing here in town,
because we definitely have to do both.
We kind of need Brian to get back in town.
Yeah, we're waiting to see what Brian is, what his plan is to do.
I think he wants to go to shaky at least one day as well.
Absolutely.
I'm excited to one of my longtime favorites is Weird Al.
Yep. And there's a punch on here.
Blink 182 week.
We can get to it.
But you want to go day by day first or you want to go what your highlights are?
Let's go day by day.
All right.
Friday, obviously, Deftones is number one on my list.
Yeah. And they just put out a new album.
I haven't listened to it yet, but reviews are good.
I think Festival said something.
He was impressed with their performance and their song.
So, you know.
Who else? We got Lenny Kravitz, Sublime.
Sublime is one that we should have seen at Southstar.
They got cut short because of the rain.
The weather canceled Sunday and they were the big headliner. Right.
No. Well, they weren't them and Blink 182, actually. Yeah. Right.
So there's a few bands on here that are almost make up,
especially when it comes to Bonnaroo, because some of these bands
we were going to see at Bonnaroo and didn't get the chance to.
Joey Valance was on our list, right?
That was a highly recommended.
Yeah.
Idols, they played last year. Is that right?
Yeah. Pixies. They've played Spoon.
Then I'll probably get down there Saturday.
That's my thought. Probably get down there Saturday.
Stay overnight. OK. And stay at.
Stay through Sunday.
That's my plan anyway.
But Saturday, my chemical romance cage.
Who we keep missing.
Yeah. Right.
Yeah. The last time I saw them was when they did that
pop up show at Bonnaroo in 2018, I think.
Yeah. Your first year there.
And they just kind of did a surprise show at the.
Of was it House of Yes?
I was one of the plazas out in camp.
Yeah. And then Black Keys.
I think they have new music out, don't they?
Or are going to going to.
Public Enemy Band. That one goes way back for me.
Yeah. I actually saw somebody on on one of the
social sad that they didn't realize that Flava Flav was in Public Enemy.
Yeah. I was like, wait, what?
How did you know? Yeah.
Where else would he? Where else would you know him from?
So you know Chuck D, but you don't know flavor play with the big clock.
So that's kind of funny.
Backseat lovers we've had on our show.
They were terrific TV on the radio.
All American rejects.
Johnny Marr, one of the great guitar players.
See Johnny Marr. Yeah.
Yeah. Anytime.
That's one of those lifetime bucket lists.
You got to say you've seen Johnny Marr beaches.
If Brian was here, Brian has a great beaches story.
Classic Bryan Stone.
Yeah. Sat next to him at a bar, right?
And didn't know who they were.
Right there at the House of Matrimony.
That's what it was. Yeah.
Right there at Bonnaroo.
I'll let him tell it.
Mannequin Pussy. Again, we missed.
Bill Murray. We missed.
Michigander, another friend of the show.
Great guest that we had. This show is awesome.
Hey, Nothing, another friend of the show.
The one interview we did get to do this last year.
Yeah, we got to interview them, but we didn't get to see him. No.
So I'm going to get to see him.
And they're also dice bits.
Yeah, that was a big one that I hate that I missed.
Everyone was talking about how good that was.
You know, I hope maybe we can set up an interview with Hey,
Nothing to just sort of book end. That'd be cool.
Yeah, because what a summer they've had.
Yeah, it'd be great to have sort of done a million festivals
since we last talked to him.
Guys, if you if you want to go back and listen to that interview,
because these guys and I don't care who you are.
They've had an incredible summer. They have. Yeah.
Plus, they're from Atlanta, so they're going to be playing hometown.
That always means a lot, I think, when artists get to play their own town.
Sunday for me is the big day, obviously, with Devo.
But Blink 182 is the headliner.
Vampire Weekend, Alabama Shakes.
I guess they're back with Brittany.
Brittany's back with the Shakes.
Yeah, she went solo for a little while and played Bonnaroo.
That's very cool. Oh, Wetleg.
Wetleg is another one that.
And I know you've seen their tiny desk.
I have seen. Yes.
And I'm curious about her outfit.
Yeah. Yeah. You know, it's going to be. I know something.
That's if you haven't seen it, go look at Wetleg's tiny desk.
And if you can tell me what possessed her to put that ensemble together.
I can't wait to hear your answer.
It's like shoulder pads and a codpiece.
I know. Are you playing football or?
Yeah. And why do you need a jock with a cod?
Anyway, I like them a lot.
Four non-blondes. Yeah, that's a big one for me.
That's huge.
Frans Fernandes, Frans Fernandes, Frans Ferdinand.
Yeah, sorry, I've always said that wrong.
Stereophonics, M.D.
Mokhtar, who will always have a special place.
In Bonnaroo lore as the first one that I can remember
that sort of dropped the schedule early.
Yeah, he leaked it. What year was that? That was.
Twenty. Was it twenty or maybe it was?
Yeah. Yeah, because it did never happen.
Never. That was our big goal was to talk to him
because it was such a thing and then it never happened.
Yeah, he dropped the schedule, what, about an hour early before
it was supposed to come out.
So probably somebody got a time zone mixed up or something.
Yeah. And now they do it all the time.
Yeah. I think now even Bonnaroo does it on purpose.
I think so. I mean, ICP leaked it, you know, this year and somebody else.
Who else is on there?
And Weird Al. And Weird Al, who is billed as a special guest.
Yeah. So, I mean, that's a that's a pretty great.
And it's at Piedmont Park. Yeah.
We're going to have to figure out how we're going down there.
We've been reaching out, trying to get we're going to try to get interviews,
trying to line up interviews, maybe with somebody ahead of time.
I don't know if that's going to happen because they're coming right up on it.
Yeah. If nothing else, we're going to get as many as we can on site,
which is what we love to do. Right. Right. Yeah.
And the same with the IBM, a
I don't know how that's going to go.
I know Steve Martin, we want to talk to.
We've put a request in Alison Brown, his co
special chair.
I don't know whatever their host.
I don't know what that means.
I guess he'll just be walking around.
So for you don't for those of you who don't know,
we did a special show with Ken White.
Correct. We did. Yeah.
Ken White and Randy Steele, Randy Steele.
Randy's a local guy. Ken is the director of the IBM.
A IBM, a bluegrass is a huge.
It's not just a festival like we know it, though there is that component.
There is music, but it basically takes over all of whatever city it's in
and puts on events at various venues.
But also it has a conference component to it.
There's a conference, there's awards.
There's if you're into bluegrass at all, this is like showcases, showcases.
Yeah, this is so if you're trying to be, if you're an artist
trying to be discovered, Chattanooga is where you want to be. Yeah.
And I guarantee you, I mean, even if you don't see anybody,
if you don't go to any shows on stage, there's going to be people on the street
just busking basically.
Yeah, that's that's the goal.
And I know they told us they're going to shut down again.
Part of again, if you're not from Chattanooga, it wouldn't mean anything.
But basically from Miller Park into Patton Square.
So a couple of blocks, city blocks, there are several venues there.
They will be there will be outdoor stages as well.
So there's going to be tons of music.
And that's the whole goal is to be to see and be seen.
Yeah. Right. Yeah.
So I can't imagine that it's Steve Martin's goal
to come to Chattanooga and hole up in a hotel room.
I'm not trying to speak for him, but yeah, I don't know if he's ever been to Chattanooga.
Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
He's been here with Martin.
He's been here with Martin Short.
And I actually got to interview the two of them.
I've done it twice.
He's he's a lot more approachable than one might have thought.
And I again, like Devo, I mean, Steve Martin was like I
put any one of those three albums on and I can go.
Yeah, I can recite it word for word from start to finish, because that's all I did.
And for me, it's the movies.
Yeah. He's been in a ton of movies, The Jerk,
Three Amigos, which I know you're not a fan of. Right.
Planes, trains and automobiles.
I mean, he's done a ton of films, a lot of Saturday Night Live.
Yeah, I think when he the first five time.
Yeah. Yeah.
So very exciting, a lot happening.
So you said it last week on this show, we kind of thought, you know, once Bonnaroo
passed and got rained out that, oh, summer's over, not much happening. Yeah.
But here it comes.
Yeah, we've got Shaking Knees and IBM, and then
KFES, which I wore my KFES shirt today.
Yep. Yeah. Coming up in October.
Yes, you did.
Yeah, that's going to be another one.
We got to figure out how we're going to get up there.
Go back there to our second favorite place on the planet.
It really is. Yeah, it's so awesome.
So, yeah, what else?
What else we got?
We obviously remember the news from last week or so with Brad Parker leaving.
I've obviously reached out to Brad, not only hope to have him on the show
at some point soon to talk about his new venture, which he said
is literally his dream, and he's very excited.
Yeah, you can tell. Track record.
He's going to be a record label owner and manage artists.
So excited for him.
But obviously, we want to have his replacements on who we have not heard officially.
No, we have not. Who it is.
We've reached out to, you know, but have not heard anything.
Yeah. On the record.
We will have them he or she on, I hope, as soon as we can.
I'd love to. Yeah.
Obviously, that person is going to want to sort of get their feet under them,
I would assume.
That was the word I got was sure.
Yeah, we'll set that up.
But it's a little early. Relax. Yeah.
Yeah. When I first heard the news that Brad was leaving and he said,
you know, in September, I was still thinking, well, that's a long time.
No, it's like next week.
I know exactly.
Same with Shaking Ease.
I'm like, yeah, we'll deal with that. Oh, it's here.
It's on top of us.
So we're looking at that.
And then they still haven't announced when they will announce lineup for Bonnaroo.
We do know they will not start ticket sales until they announce it,
which I think makes sense. Yeah.
I think you did say they'll probably do a little bit of an early
window for, you know, previous ticket holders. Right.
But for the most part, they're going to go on sale when the lineup is announced.
And also, they made it very clear, they being Brad and Corey and C3
and anybody else involved in that they're still sort of
tinkering with what Bonnaroo 2026 will look like. Yeah.
Yeah. As far as the size and
the I think the big thing most people want to know about is the Thursday
opening ceremony.
That's going to look like the big question on everybody's mind.
Yeah. And I think I had said last time that, you know,
the idea of everybody being in that space all at once.
I'm not sure that's the idea.
Sounds like they probably have something over on the other.
Maybe I don't know. Just speculate. Yeah.
They probably don't even know yet.
Yeah, I think they're trying to figure that out.
And I couldn't tell. Maybe you did.
Does it sound to you like they know who the artists will be or that they don't?
I don't think they do. Yeah, I don't either. So.
So that will be big. That's what everybody wants to know about.
I know this will be there.
We'll be there. Yeah.
God willing, Creek don't rise and all that stuff.
Yeah. If if they let us, we'll be there.
Yeah, we'll be there if we can.
Of course, I won't be there on Tuesday, unfortunately, but.
Well, you say that.
I have a hard I have a feeling you will be.
I'll be I might not be on the farm.
Jay's in Manchester. You'll be Bonnaroo adjacent.
That's right. I'll be I'll probably be a common John.
You'll be there somehow somewhere. Yeah.
All right. What other news?
What else do we have?
You know, Brian is coming back from his trip.
He went to Washington State to see, coincidentally, a friend.
And I won't speak for him, but that he met at Bonnaroo.
Yeah, it's it's a Bonnaroo connection.
I talked about that a couple of weeks ago about just the fact that through Bonnaroo,
we know so many people throughout the country.
Absolutely. And make stuff like this possible.
I'm excited to hear when he gets back.
So, yeah, I asked him, you know,
are you going to Seattle because it's not too far from Seattle?
And he was like, no. And I was like, are you kidding?
Mr. Pearl Jam is not going to go to Seattle.
And he's like, no, I think we're just going to stick around town.
There's some coffee shops and they've got a really nice post office.
OK, you're going to fly across the country.
You go to the post office.
God, what we have become.
I know. I can't wait to hear that story.
You're going to mail yourself a postcard.
I love it. Yeah. What did you do?
I went to a post office.
Yeah. So he'll be back. He'll be back.
And then for me, football starts in a week.
So I'm excited. There you go.
Yeah. That's shaping up to be a yeah.
You know, the summer is winding down.
It's finally getting a taste of cool weather.
It's what 80 degrees out here feels great.
Yeah, that's why we're sitting outside. So.
What else are we going to do?
Labor Day trip out to the other farm, Lindsey?
Are you? Yeah. All right.
So that's another that's I was trying to think.
I was trying to think of Bonnaroo people that have been here at my house.
That's how I consider real friends.
Have you been to my house? Yeah.
Lindsey's been to my house.
David Bruce has been to my house. Yeah.
You know who hadn't been to my house?
Bryan Stone, Bryan Stone, and he just lives right over there.
Never been here.
I've been to his, but I've not been invited in.
Yeah, I guess I'm not a true friend.
I've only been in his driveway.
That's all I've ever heard.
All right. Well, I can't think of anything else.
So I brought something I wanted to show you.
This is there it is.
Weird Al tape. Oh, it is.
I don't know for sure, but I think that's the first tape that I ever bought
was a weird out in 3D cassette tape.
So, I mean, I've pretty much been a fan my whole life.
In fact, a lot of his songs I heard first and didn't know they were parodies
didn't until I went back and heard the original.
So so he was your gateway drug.
Rick Deringer produced this. Wow. OK.
So this has eat it.
Obviously, the Michael Jackson parody Midnight Star, the Brady Bunch.
Buy me a condo. I lost on Jeopardy.
That was a good one.
Pokers on 45. That was a good one.
Mr. Pompil, King of Swade.
That boy could dance.
Theme from Rocky Eight and Nature Trail to Hell.
That's funny.
He does parodies and he does original songs, too.
And and what there was, I was trying to think if there's a
Devo connection and the Dare to be Stupid is a Devo inspired song
that he did, you know, he dressed up like them.
And it's it's very much in the style of Devo, if not,
just it's not a straight out parody.
But yeah, I've seen him twice.
I think he played the Tivoli one year.
Saw him here.
I don't know if you've ever seen him live.
I don't think I have.
I know he's been here. I know.
Well, he always has a really good band around.
I mean, he's had the same band since the beginning.
I mean, and yeah, it's a really good band.
It's a really good show.
That's funny. That's funny that you have that.
Yeah, just it reminds me.
I was trying to think, obviously, of being so nostalgic.
The first single that I ever bought was
the Bee Gees Jive Talking
at nights on Broadway on the on the flip side.
The first record that I ever bought was Elton John's Greatest Hits.
And of course, I bought it at like at Eckards.
Yeah, a local pharmacy.
Yeah, I remember not even a record store.
That's funny. And that that is funny, though.
Yeah, I was thinking back.
I don't have a strong recollection of what was first,
but I think this was probably it's probably the oldest tape that I have.
I still have.
So that's a good one.
That's a good pull right there.
He's I guess I don't know if he's closed out Sunday or.
No, I think he's he's probably early.
And I look, he's I think Devo is at like four or five in the afternoon.
And then he's right after.
All right. Perfect. Yeah.
So it'll be evening, evening time.
So that'll be a lot of fun.
Yeah. Let us know if you're going to Shaking Ease.
I know we've talked to a bunch of people that are planning to go,
you know, some people got their
bonnet refund and are spending it on another festival. So. Yeah.
Absolutely. All right.
Well, good deal.
Thank you. Welcome again from the world headquarters.
World headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Yeah.
Yeah. Not a lot of news to get to this week, but we still want to know.
But I think the the circle, if you will,
with Devo and Weird Al, I'm so glad you brought that cassette.
Yeah. Yeah.
This is, you know, it's sounds trite or whatever,
but this is why we love Bonnaroo and all these festivals.
This stuff, I mean, I'm talking going back to 1970.
I know. Yeah.
First of all, that tells you how old I am, but also it says how relevant this stuff is.
Right. And I really would recommend watching that Devo documentary.
You watch it on Netflix. It's really good.
I learned a lot. I enjoyed the whole thing.
I mean, and just they formed before they were even thinking about writing music.
And it was always art first and expression.
Yeah, that's the other thing that like if you're not a fan of their music
or don't even know or you don't even know about Kent State or any of that stuff,
you should be able to see elements of whatever band you're into now
because they're struggling with the same thing Devo was.
Yeah. And I had to there were several times I had to laugh,
but the fact that people confused their plastic hairdos,
thought it was after Ronald Reagan when it was actually John F. Kennedy.
Yeah, they were so offended. So offended.
People thought it was Reagan.
I think that broke them up.
The band, I think that did them in as much as anything.
Yeah, well, that and they kept they had signed with Warner.
And then, of course, Richard Branson tried to poach them for Virgin, his label.
And there was a big lawsuit there, but they stayed with Warner and
they weren't sure how it's going to go.
But they put out the album and then the single Whip It,
which, of course, made them a lot of money.
And they did it was like a five record deal.
And they said, OK, they just kept saying, OK, well, when's the next Whip It coming out?
Because that's all they cared about was when's the next hit.
And they didn't want to do that.
So again, going back 1980, my friend, Jeff Hendy, who I mentioned,
he and I DJed a couple of dances.
We were terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible because we recorded everything.
We didn't even spin records. We literally recorded it.
But we knew if we played Whip It, we could get everybody on the dance floor.
And we probably played it three times a night.
It's funny. They had written their songs and they played them and kind of got booed off stage.
And then they heard the Ramones, how fast they played them and how quickly they got through a
song and they're like, well, let's just play our songs really, really fast.
And that's pretty much how they got their sound.
Yeah, that's a good. That's a great point.
There's there's so many things in there that are relevant that you'll recognize
no matter who you are and what age you are.
Yeah. And going back to Four Non Blondes, because they're playing Sunday, too.
Linda Perry, she's one of my favorites and it's kind of the same story.
They had the one hit What's Up?
Right. And the record label kept pushing.
When's the next What's Up? coming out?
And she didn't want to she didn't want to be a pop star.
She didn't want to fill that role.
So she quit the band and ended up writing and producing a lot of artists throughout
two thousands and beyond.
I mean, her the amount of work that she's put out kind of behind the scenes.
It's a pretty familiar story.
Yeah. Yeah.
Well, you got to love technology when it's working.
And we do. And it was working.
But apparently the recorder didn't like the hot sunshine,
even though it was a is a very pleasant day.
So yeah, it cut off right at the last.
I mean, literally the last minute.
I mean, you know, we pretty much got everything.
So not a huge deal, but I was going to make a really good point.
And then they cut off.
So we'll never know what now what I was going to say.
There it is.
Worth the wait.
And now we know now we'll never know.
But anyway, if you guys are still with us, thank you so much.
Please hit like, subscribe and do all that stuff.

So yeah, I think that's a great idea.
We laugh about it.
We joke about it.
But it's the truth.
We're all in that same club.
Everybody hates us because it's all we talk about.
Please stop talking about Bonnaroo.

But we'll be back talking about Bonnaroo.
Yeah.
All right.
Awesome.
Thank you, guys.
