The What Podcast Bourbon & Beyond 2026 Recap From Two Festival Veterans Season 9, Episode 39 Published October 7, 2026 https://thewhatpodcast.com/episode/bourbon-and-beyond-2026-recap-from-two-festival-veterans Barry (00:00) How do you guys do Bourbon and Beyond? David (00:03) So I literally walked out of the parking lot and I probably had to walk about two hundred yards and I'm at the entrance. Trevin (00:08) Yeah, that's that's one weird thing about Bourbon and Beyond. If if you don't buy your hotel through them, you you can't go in and out. I think that's pretty weird. Barry (00:20) Welcome back to a special edition of The What Podcast. I'm Barry, that's Russ joining us. We've got our senior correspondent Trevin Bernarding and our junior correspondent Russ (00:32) Ha Barry (00:32) David Champion. How are you guys doing? David (00:35) Well, I'll take it. Trevin (00:37) yeah, doing well. Doing well, Barry. So Barry (00:39) Yeah, it's it's it's only because David, I think Trevin's been on a couple of more times than you have. It's no David (00:44) Yeah, absolutely. Trevin (00:45) Well, there's more to it than that, Barry, you know. But Russ (00:48) Hehehehe Trevin (00:49) I think senior and junior is is appropriate Barry (00:51) I could Yeah. Trevin (00:54) way to separate us. Barry (00:55) Well, we are glad to have you guys. there's a lot of things I want to cover. longtime listeners will recognize these guys. they have been on with us multiple times but to talk about variety of topics, but mostly you guys become well, well traveled in the festival circuit. Right, you guys go to more than a few every year. David (01:23) Try to. Yeah. Barry (01:24) But Trevin (01:24) Yeah, we and and together as well. We go to quite a few together. We I talked David into going to twenty fifteen Firefly with me. in twenty fourteen was our first year there and he joined us twenty fifteen. And I don't know if you remember Barry, but you interviewed us twenty seventeen, Bonnarooo. I got we're actually we're actually in the paper. So Barry (01:43) Yeah, yeah. David (01:43) Yeah, that's true. Russ (01:43) Hahaha. Trevin (01:44) that was pretty cool. So I saw po I like I read that article. It's a good good memory you c captured for us. Barry (01:50) Correct me if I'm wrong, but I s what I seem to remember is you weren't going as often then. I don't know that we can take claim to introducing you guys to festivals, but it felt like it was pretty much you kinda we started talking about it and then pretty soon you were going pretty regularly. Am I overstating? Trevin (02:11) think David around that time you you started going as well. I star I s twenty fourteen was my first real festival in Firefly. Barry (02:16) Okay. Trevin (02:17) But I s but and then twenty fifteen David and his son joined myself and Andy Sawyer and his son and but David, you I go two or three a year now. So David (02:25) Yeah. Once I once I got that that first firefly down, I think we went to that was it. I was like, okay, I I like doing this. This now camping was not my forte, Russ (02:35) You're hooked. David (02:36) that's for sure. But the Barry (02:38) Yeah. David (02:38) no, but that got me hooked on it 'cause I think Trev and I probably went I went to probably four or five fireflies. We went to the last firefly together, as a matter of fact, in like twenty twenty two till they they till they stopped it. Trevin (02:51) Yeah, I went I went almost every year and and David would join me about every other year for that one. But no, we we've been to Lollapalooza. the old what's that festival in Birmingham we went to, David? with David (03:01) that was Trevin (03:03) the Furnace Festival that's so friggin' hot in July. But Shaky Knees and all all kinds of festivals, pilgrimage. Russ (03:11) Yeah. Barry (03:11) Let's work a little bit backwards. we're a little bit late. just cause it happened what two weekends ago. But the the timing that I wanted to talk to you guys when I reached out originally was because you were going to Bourbon and Beyond, right? And Louisville. You both went. I want to talk about that and then get your thoughts on a lot of the other ones, sort of compare and contrast. kind of thing because you have been to so many. And David, your your point about camping, that's one of the things I want to talk about because you guys have done it lots of different ways. Right? G A, V I P, all of the different ways. So let's let's start with Bourbon and Beyond. What was that like? 'Cause that was man, that lineup was me all over. I hated missing that one. Russ (04:04) Mm-hmm. Trevin (04:04) Yeah, it's it's one of the ones where I I buy it I just buy it now. I I couldn't go last year I had a d daughter getting married and things. But it's my third th third out of fourth year I've gone to Bourbonly on, but but you know, they it it just it's just it's most people are older, honestly. There are younger folks there. Like I was surprised Chris Stapleton played Saturday night and it was all just women at various ages in their mini skirts and cowboy boots that day. But but but for the most part You know, it was it was old, it's an older crowd. lots of guitars, which I like, and no d no there were no DJ sets. That gives you a which nothing wrong with that. I like DJ I like want to see DJs. But it's just a different vibe, you know, it's just more Americana, I guess, lack of a better word, kind of festival. David (04:54) Yeah, I think we actually bought our tickets before they put the lineup, didn't we, Trevin? Yeah, we just we just Trevin (04:58) Well yeah, we did, yeah, we did. David (04:59) w I I knew I wanted to go 'cause Trevin had recommended it. And the we had Trevin and I had not been to a festival together since twenty twenty two, so it was like it was time for another dude trip, sort of had evolved out. There were a couple of glitches in this trip, but it worked out okay. Barry (05:16) Now, I should I should have said that at the beginning, I know both of you because our daughters played soccer together in high school. So you guys were in Chattanooga. Neither of you live in Chattanooga anymore, do you? Trevin (05:27) No yeah, I moved eight eight years ago and I'll be moving back soon. That's the plan that's the plan. So I I Barry (05:33) Okay. Russ (05:33) No, really. Trevin (05:34) have yeah, my youngest daughter is at Auburn and one once I'm I'm in Pennsylvania now. And so once once she once she graduates and well, she's my youngest of four, we'll be back to Chattanooga pretty soon. David (05:45) And then I'm over in North Myrtle Beach. We moved here about four years ago. Barry (05:48) One of the things we have talked about, and I don't know that it's kept us from Bourbon and Beyond, it's more of a timing thing. Cause I went up to Forecastle in Louisville several years ago. but this is in a completely different location. And we've always been sort Trevin (06:04) Right. Barry (06:04) of leery of the fairgrounds kind of thing, because we would want to camp. But we've heard from multiple people. Some say it's the great location. Some say yeah, there's a lot of This, you know, that there's camping is not perfect. And then others said it was just fine. So how do you guys do Bourbon and Beyond? Trevin (06:26) I I camped the first year. I think I was on this podcast and told that that story. You know, I I did camp. the problem with camping when you're my age is you have UPS as a hub for Louisville and the fairgrounds are right by the airport. And it's it's I don't see how people do it, honestly, cause of the noise. The the it's a nice campground though. It's grass and everything else, but but the past two years I I I've done hotels. Right, because there's plenty of hotels in in in different price ranges, right right by the fairgrounds. So David (06:58) And that's what I did. I stayed Russ (06:59) Yeah, I think we've talked about David (06:59) at a hotel. Russ (07:00) that before and kind of joked that it's like the scene in Wayne's World where, you know, they're laying on the car and the plane flies over and... Yeah. Trevin (07:06) yeah, I mean it's yeah, David (07:06) One hundred percent. I mean, even some of the artists complain Trevin (07:08) it's David (07:09) about it, th th though there's another plane. Yeah, they're literally flying almost behind the stages. Trevin (07:14) Yeah, ha yeah yeah, Howie Day was a little bit pretentious, honestly, about it. He was he was he was f his he was getting mad at the airplane so I'm like, Well, I mean what what what you can do about the airplanes, man? So no. Russ (07:26) Yeah, I don't think they're listening. Trevin (07:30) But Barry (07:29) Ask him to turn it down. Russ (07:31) Nuh-heh-heh. Barry (07:32) Speaking of airplanes, David, I wanted to hear your you had kind of an interesting flight. yeah. David (07:38) my my brush was greatness kind of. Well, the Russ (07:41) Good segue. Good segue. David (07:43) well the the the the flight from Myrtle Beach to Atlanta, I didn't realize it, but right as I'm getting off, the the lead singer from the Marshall Tucker band was there, the original singer for them. So he kind of introduced himself and I and I know some of the songs, but it's like, that's kind of cool. But then the the flight from Atlanta to Louisville, as I'm sitting there in the seat, woman gets on the plane. She has a support local music. t-shirt on. So I I commented to her, I said, I like your t-shirt. And she said, Well, are you going to Bourbon to beyond? I said, Yeah. She goes, Who are you really looking forward to seeing? And I said, actually Cheap Trick's one of my favorite. In fact, I mentioned kind of Trevin, Trevin, Cheap Trick's one of Trevin's favorite bands. And she goes, yeah, I'm I'm looking forward to seeing them too. And then for whatever reason she starts talking to the the gentleman behind her. And she goes, Are you going to Bourbon Beyond? He goes, yeah, we're performing. And she goes, who who are you? And he goes, I'm the lead singer for Cheap Trick. And so I turned around and went, I Russ (08:37) No. David (08:38) thought I recognized you kind of when you came on the plane. but and then about mid-flight, I get a little tap on the shoulder and he hands me a little Cheap Trick pick. I went, that's kind of cool. I said, Do you mind if I take a picture? He goes, let's wait till we get off the plane. So sure enough, we got off the plane and took a picture with him and then with Rick Nielson, the guitarist. right as he was going to the bathroom, I called him and I said, Let me get a picture. And he gave me a picture with him too. So that was Russ (09:02) Nice. David (09:02) kind of cool. He's looking old. The guitarist is looking old. Barry (09:05) Ha yeah. David (09:06) Yeah. Russ (09:06) Ha David (09:07) But that was fun. Trevin (09:09) Yeah, I was glad I could help you out, David. Cause I really I really w cheap trick, I don't know. I was in high school, that's one of my one of my bands, and they play at River Bend. Guys, you remember seeing them at River Bend? David (09:18) Yeah. Russ (09:18) Mm-hmm. Yep. Trevin (09:20) so this set was actually I mean memories p are funny, but I thought this set was was better. They have a younger one that one of the sons is a lead singer guitarist for him. And I think he brought a little bit of different energy to the band. I thought it was a little bit better set than what they did at River Bend. Barry (09:35) I'm with you guys. They're one of my favorites, so that's really cool. Yeah, you were texting me while you were on the flight. Guess who's sitting behind me, kind of thing? I'm like, no way. Gotta David (09:40) Yeah. I was I was pretty excited, I'm not gonna lie. Russ (09:42) Mm-hmm. Barry (09:44) be kidding. That's pretty cool. good festival. David (09:50) one hundred percent. I enjoyed it. I I'll go back any day. Yeah. Trevin (09:52) Yeah, it's it's yeah, the organization and and like this is David's David's first. This is my third. They've expanded the big one of the biggest complaints I had last time was that this the the sound bleed between they they they have they do the system where you have two big stages next to each other. And then they have another set just like that, slightly smaller stages. But if you you could hear if you're sitting in the right spot on the old setup, you could hear it was like what this is weird. you you can hear other bands, but but they they made it bigger. The the footprint is s same same fairgrounds, but they've made the footprint bigger. So a little bit a little bit longer to walk around, but not but not too bad. But but really good really good setup. yeah, they I I wish it's all on a parking lot. So they put down artificial turf and things. So that's it it it and we got lucky. I heard Loudder than Life the weekend before was like ninety five a hundred degrees. Russ (10:48) Mm-hmm. Trevin (10:48) we were seventy five degrees every day. It was perfect David (10:51) It was perfect. Trevin (10:51) weather. So but yeah, on a hot day it it wouldn't be it wouldn't be optimal. Barry (10:55) Yeah. Trevin (10:55) B being a parking lot, basically. Barry (10:58) David said you bought your tickets before even the lineup. So and and the y one of your reasons for doing it is 'cause you guys wanted to go to something together. Why why Bourbon and Beyond? Why you you literally I assume either you both could go just about anywhere. Why did you choose that one? David (11:16) I think it's just because Trevan had bragged. I he had said that he really it was a good festival and and some of our other friends had talked how well they really liked it too. and I was just looking for one to go. my wife and I have gone to several over the last couple of years, but it was time to to give Trevin a little attention. But that's why we just we booked it. We knew I Barry (11:36) Wow, that's that's that's sweet. David (11:39) knew the time frame to be off Russ (11:41) You David (11:42) with my office that I needed to kind of schedule things way in advance. And so we we planned this what Trevor like in March, I think. In February or March and we and Trevin (11:50) Yeah. It's David (11:52) started all the planning for it then. Trevin (11:53) Yeah, it's got you know, I I really enjoy I really enjoy bluegrass. You know, I know I need to get to ch to the this is the Chattanooga blue grass th thing gonna be every year and in Chattanooga. I really Barry (12:02) For the next couple, yeah. Trevin (12:04) need to get down there for that. Russ (12:04) Yeah. Trevin (12:05) But they but they you know though they're they have a s they have a huge tent that they would have like different bluegrass bands too. So i guess it's always been one it's just like I said, it's been it's been a great festival. David (12:18) And I'm not much of a country fan, but I do like I I I don't I I do like I can listen to bluegrass. I know it's kind of weird thing, but I I definitely like bluegrass over country. Barry (12:27) And you've done different all different ways. I mentioned V I P. And and GA, but you've gone individually, right? Do you not you've gone to festivals by yourself? David (12:38) I've actually done lolliplos by myself a couple of years ago where I couldn't get anybody to go with me. So I said, I'm going. And but I did the the highest tier VIP for that and that just because I I kind of felt I earned it. And that was really good. Barry (12:52) Yeah. David (12:53) I mean, with the the shuttles, with the golf carts between all the stages, it w it really was not bad at all. Barry (13:00) What goes into your decision making? and I'll ask both of you that. what are your criteria for go going to a festival? and what changes? What what what's what can be different? I assume you're not looking for the exact same thing from each one of them. Trevin (13:24) No, I think for me it's more about for me it's always about the music first and foremost. I mean I know you know you know bon Bonnarooo.. I only been in one Bonnarooo. and that now that one to me is just unique. You know, it's never it's really so much more than than than the music of Bonnarooo., the camaraderie and the what do you call it, Barry, the hugging and and h hug and hownies and all that Barry (13:42) Hug howdy. Russ (13:43) Hug and howdy. Trevin (13:45) stuff but you know, so for me it's it's you know, it's it's really about a good diversity of music and and a combination of you know current acts and nostalgia. a certain festival I I d I wanna I I enjoy, you know, the top alternative bands, which this this festival did not ha really have any of the top alternative bands, but it's just more about, you know, having different different experiences with the music, being able to discover new music and and things of that nature. You know, that's that's what I'm looking for. David (14:20) Well, one of the reasons I like with Lollapalooza, I mean, I just love Chicago. I'm really so that's always a draw for me to have an excuse to go up to Chicago for sure. and like like Trev was saying it's I'm I'm always and Trev's the same way. We we're the guys that when those gates open, we're going in then 'cause we want to hear those very lower tier bands. 'Cause that's where that's where this that's that's Trevin (14:39) Yeah, we're we're th we're there noon to noon to midnight. Russ (14:40) Hmm? Yeah. David (14:42) when we're on the front rail. You get I mean, you really get see in, you know, these thirty, forty minute sets are they're packing it in. They're making it You know, they're making their debuts there sometimes. So that's what I like. In fact, a lot of times with the headliners, I'm kinda burned out by the end of the day. I'm done. You know. So I mean after like I think Trev and I, how many times have we seen Foo Fighters? A lot. And and they put on a good Trevin (15:03) I've seen them like eight, nine times. David (15:05) show, but it's like I don't need to be up front for them, you know, like that. So Trevin (15:09) Even though I was, I was pretty close. I I was pretty close for a food fathers. We were pretty close. We're twenty feet. We're we're we're David (15:12) I was with you, remember? Yeah, okay. Trevin (15:16) t we were we were pretty friggin' close. I mean, Russ (15:17) Hahaha Trevin (15:19) you may have been a little bit inebriated by that point, David, but we're we're pretty, you know, not to give away too many secrets. But I mean, but like like it's always a theme too. Like like this festival, you know, there's there's this band called Congress, Congress the Band, the Stews, and I'm noticing a trend. He's Yeah, it's almost like frat bands are back. I don't know. I can't really ex describe it. I I texted my daughter Brooklyn, you know, she's at Auburn. I said, you would love this band. Got I got a lot of festivals with them, Brooklyn. Says they're called Con Congress a Band. And she sent me back a picture from a month ago at a frat party. They were there a month ago. And and and Russ (15:56) guys. Barry (15:56) Wow. Trevin (15:56) and they had moved Congress from noon to five PM slot. So, you know, I guess by the time they booked them, they were they were just but they were getting so popular lately they actually had a good really Russ (16:04) Mm-hmm. Trevin (16:04) good slot. So it's it's about discovering new music, you know, for me of course and and and and some and some of the old old standards too. Just just it's just just a great it's always a great day. Barry (16:15) I think the last time you were on, Trevan, you and the family were about to go to Canada together. Trevin (16:20) Yeah, o Ossiaga. Yeah, that's another great festival. Oseaga in is what it's called and that was a year ago, June. Was it two years ago? But anyway, it was yeah, it's it's a no, in in a July August time frame, two two years ago. Yeah, we yeah, for that trip I paid for the entire it was like a reunion. How do I get my kids together? I got one in you know, Bridget, who you know Barry, is in Oregon with a I have a grandbaby now. Brett's in Denver and Brianna's in Virginia and that got Brooklyn. So yeah, we all went to Oshiaga. That's you sh th that's a great festival. my goodness. That's incredible. So Barry (16:59) What was it like with the family? 'Cause we've talked on here many times. Don't you know, if don't take someone who's not a hundred percent committed. Don't go with a spouse or a loved one if they're not as into it as you are. So Trevin (17:11) Yes, that's definitely Russ (17:11) Yeah. Trevin (17:12) true. I think for whatever reason, like all the festivals I've done, everything else, it's just we've we've we've we've gone to a lot of festivals together at different times. That the first time we went all all together. But yeah, it's it's you know, it's it's good to be all committed for sure. D in twenty seventeen, we read that article. our our kids some our kids were there. I I Bridget and and Brett were there. They camped. I I stayed in R V but David (17:38) Yeah, I think my daughter and son were there too. Yeah, they were ca they were camping elsewhere but they were there as well. Mm-hmm. Barry (17:44) And David, Russ, you remember we met with David and his wife last year at Shaky Knees, briefly. So Russ (17:49) do remember that, yeah, I think we got a picture. Barry (17:52) she your your spouse is as into it as you are, David, that's right. David (17:54) She what she's she's Russ (17:55) Yeah. David (17:56) on that front row. She wants to be up there. She's she's she does what I call the Trevine, where you start winding through the crowd to get closer. And I'm like, I I'm like, I'm good right here. And she's Russ (18:03) Hehehehehe David (18:04) like, no, we can go. We can get two more, two more roads closer. Let's go. Yeah. Russ (18:07) Two more rows in, yeah. Follow me. Trevin (18:11) It's Barry (18:11) Yeah. Trevin (18:11) just gotta be p like I told one guy I I want to be front for Hootie and Blowfish. You know, I saw Darius Rucker on his country tour past June, but I w I wanted to be front and center for Hootie. I just you know, slow and steady and eventually I'm on the rail. So but I was by myself for that one at the festival 'cause I I I I I I I'm I'm one I'm one that likes to be like to be up front. So Barry (18:35) Yeah, I'm like David. I like to be comfortable. If I'm up front, fine. David (18:37) Yeah. I'm I'm I'm at that point in my life. Russ (18:44) If you're enjoying the show, take a moment and subscribe to our YouTube channel and rate us five stars on Apple podcasts and Spotify. Barry (18:51) Talk about the creature comforts, because and I'm asking from a couple of angles from as as you know, experienced festivalgoers, talk about how important the creature comforts are. But also if you don't mind, kind of keep in mind maybe that person who's thinking about it but has never really done it. how do where does all that come into play? Cause I mean, David, you kind of headed at it and we're all of a certain age. The idea of sleeping on the ground in the mud. not as appealing as a hotel room with air conditioning or even a N R V. Trevin (19:30) Yes, that's how I pick festivals now too is you know what David had I mean talk about your experience, David, at Bur and Beyond. He he stayed in like where the where the band stay at the Crown Plaza right by the grounds. I was I was David (19:44) With with three other people, but Trevin (19:47) yeah, I was I end up this is a long story that bore it to be too boring for this podcast, but I end up two miles away at a at a Red Roof Inn, which is like I was by myself though. So I was like, I knew my wife would never stay in a freaking Red Roof Inn two miles from a festival. I mean it it's just you just have to know your limits. You know, I didn't mind. I I'm a referee soccer. I'm pretty good shape. I it was a good walk. Come in, but some some days sometimes I took I took lift, but but it's all to it's all about access, you know, and you do want to be restful. I mean I I I as we mentioned me David and I are there when it when it when the gates open and we're we're there when it closes. So it's very important. You know, have that have that comfortable style when you get when you get back. David (20:30) Yeah, because I stay out I stayed at the Crown Plaza. So I literally walked out of the parking lot and I probably had to walk about 200 yards and I'm at the entrance. It is it's probably thinking it's the closest hotel you can be there. So but the thing is with the we have gotten our reservations early. So we do not have in and out privileges. So once you're in, technically you can't go back out and come back in. So but that's not that's not important to me as long as the weather's good. I don't have to come back at all. Trevin (20:57) Yes, but that's one weird thing about Bourbon Beyond. If if you don't buy your hotel through them, you you can't go in and out. I think that's pretty weird. That's probably probably not my big my Russ (21:05) That is strange. Trevin (21:06) my biggest negative for that festival, you know, is that you you're you you know, you can't go in and out. But but th they do have plenty of places for respite, so to speak, lots of shade, lots of tables, so David (21:19) And that's because we had well, we were VIP. I think that that helped a lot. Yeah. And one thing I guess, you know, most of them now VIP, if you're general mission, you're not getting near the stage. The way they had this was the entire front of the two main stages was all VIP. So I think shaky knees was a little bit like that, wasn't it? At least last year. Or they kind of sometimes they Barry (21:40) I feel like I could get pretty close. Russ (21:40) Last year, a little bit. David (21:42) split a little bit, but it I mean, so if you were on the rail and you're a general mission, you're you've got Several hundred people in front of you before you actually near the stage. Barry (21:51) Well, that's true. And then Bonnaroo the last couple of years David (21:52) And so I that that I don't mind paying for either. Trevin (21:52) Yeah that's Barry (21:54) have had this ginormous VIP that's empty. they over over do it. what has changed? What have what have you guys seen since twenty fourteen or wh whenever twenty seventeen, David, whenever you're first. How has the festival scene changed? Trevin (22:18) Think they've, you know, should have tried to add more than just the music, you know, and more more amenities, so to speak, more more tents, you know, for like just sipping bourbon for bourbon beyond, that kind of thing. But it really honestly, Barry, I'll the experience itself hasn't really changed that much for me. You know, it's still the same, you know, community experience, seeing great music. You know, it's I I'll I was even thinking about that at the festival itself. You know, this it seems like yesterday seems like yesterday I was at Firefly and enjoying music, enjoying U two, enjoying Paul McCartney. But I mean, it's it's really about all the I guess extras they've added to festivals. It's it's it's a lot different now. It's a lot better, I think, than than it used to be. Not not as bare bones. David (23:07) I think Bur Bourbon Vyond had a a lot of extra stuff to do around that that, you know, I was too interested in going to listen to the music. So I didn't really get to see a lot of that at all. But yeah. But you know, it's been that's right, that's right, true. Trevin (23:20) Didn't you ride a roller co did you didn't he go ride a roller coaster at one point? David (23:23) they opened up the amusement park. that connect, I can't remember what the name of it is, but the so I went over there with a couple Trevin (23:29) Kentucky Kingdom. David (23:30) of other friends and we rode two roller coasters in the middle of the day, which is great. We we waited maybe Russ (23:34) You David (23:35) ten minutes for each ride. And so you're up there on the roller coaster looking over all the the the crowd of people down below. That was kind of neat that they opened it up for that. And if you're like in general admission, you just need to break out of the sun or anything like that, you can go in there and there's plenty of shade in the amusement park itself. That was unique. I'd never seen anything like that before. Trevin (23:53) Hey, here's a scoop for you guys. they're changing the name next year to Bourbon and Beyond.. they're changing it to it's just gonna be it's just gonna be called And Beyond. Russ (24:01) I was going to mention that because it seemed like they've already started to kind of do that like on social media they changed their handle from Bourbon and Beyond to just Anne Beyond David (24:09) And it Russ (24:10) Festival and some of the newer branding it seems like yeah they're de-emphasizing the bourbon I was going to ask if you thought that was the case. Trevin (24:19) Yeah, defin yeah, they even first thought it was weird. Like you would see like the the bourbon be a big black streak over it. I'm like, what why are they doing they why they doing that? but part of it is I guess one thing has changed a lot beer lines. I can remember waiting for a getting to get to get a beer at every festival I went to early on. I mean, not long, but you'd stand there, stand there. Now no, Russ (24:42) Mm. Trevin (24:42) no, no. You just you just walk up and get your beer. 'Cause kid, you know, I you I sound a good old man screaming at the clouds. No one no one drinks enough anymore. But I guess that's that's so that's Russ (24:52) It's true though. mean that's really the trend, yeah. Barry (24:54) No, it's very true. Trevin (24:57) yeah, I s we still partake. that's that's definitely different. I mean that's definitely in a positive way. But I think from from what I from what I read about from from Danny Wimmer, you know, some articles I've been reading, they're definitely trying to get away from that bourbon marketing thing that they want 'cause it it it is a I mean it's If you're twenty two, you're gonna be very one of the youngest people there. I mean, it's it's like I say, except for Chris Stableton Day, which was that was Saturday. which David (25:24) Mm-hmm. Trevin (25:25) got you know, there was tons of young folks there for that. But besides that, it was older crowd. Barry (25:31) Well, I mean, we've we've talked about it here. Younger people just aren't drinking a as much and what seventy percent of our camp for us is sober or close to it. Russ (25:43) Yeah, either by choice or just the fact that they're not old enough yet. Barry (25:46) Yeah. Trevin (25:47) Ha ha. Barry (25:49) Yeah, not not a not a judgment, but it is an issue, especially for for this show 'cause, you know, we talk about festival. That's a revenue stream. Trevin (25:58) That could be part of the problem and honestly is like where where do you get this revenue extra revenue from that you need besides just just someone buying a ticket? You you want them, you know, spending money while they're there. Russ (26:09) Yeah, I gotta make up for all these people not drinking. I gotta order more beer, you know? I'm Barry (26:13) Yeah, well Russ does his part. I guess. Trevin (26:14) Yeah. David (26:15) Well the cost of beer was Russ (26:16) trying to do my share. David (26:17) the cost of Trevin (26:17) Yeah. David (26:18) beer was high. What was it? A twenty ounce beer or a sixty ounce beer was like eighteen. Trevin (26:21) It was n yeah that was normal. It was fourteen it was fourteen dollars for a beer. David (26:24) thought it was more than that. Some of a draft was almost eighteen. Yeah. Trevin (26:28) Yeah. yeah, it was it but to me it was what was what you spend at a festival. Russ (26:33) I think that's about what it was at Shaky Knees. I want to say like $15 for the Miller Lite 25 ounce. David (26:40) See, that's big. Yeah, that's yeah, this is just for Bud Light. It was but sixteen ounce it wouldn't Barry (26:45) Yeah. David (26:45) do to me it's a little bit t pricey. Barry (26:47) Where are we in the yearly cycle for you guys? Is that the last one for the year or is there another one coming up? David (26:54) I don't have anything lined up right now. Trevin (26:55) that's that's it for that's it for yeah, that's it for me. I got some I'm gonna go see geese in in D S Washington D C. have y'all have y'all seen geese at any of your festivals? Have y'all seen and Barry (27:05) yeah. Yeah. Russ (27:05) yeah, they played Bonnarooo and Shakenese this year. Barry (27:09) Yep. Trevin (27:09) That's right and another shake that's right. I forgot there were Bonnarooo too. Russ (27:13) And they're playing Huluween later this month too. They're everywhere. Trevin (27:15) Are they? Yeah. Yeah, I'm gonna I'm going there's a place called the Anthem in D C. it's really it's an incredible f venue. It's smaller. it's all it's all GA for the most part, but it has has balconies and stuff. But I'm I'm going down there to see them. But that that's the only thing I have lined up. Barry (27:36) When will you start planning next year's schedules for you and what sort of things are determining it? Do you have a set number in mind? Do you have a budget that you set aside for a year of festivals, or will it depend on what comes down the pike? Trevin (27:56) that's a good question. I think for me it's it's I'll be booking a hotel in Louisville as soon as they open up just to g just just to get a block. But I guess I won't be going to Bonaro, so that's off that's off the table. Yeah. Russ (28:10) Yeah, mark that off. Barry (28:11) Be alone. Well you and Ross will be there. Trevin (28:15) Are you gonna do the Russ (28:14) Yeah, we'll have the whole place to ourselves. Trevin (28:17) Yeah, I do have family in Manchester and Tullahoma, but maybe I'll join you. But no, it's it's it's just about y I should plan it on who on who I do certain ones with my wife, certain ones with friends like David, John Sarrow, who you know Barry goes he he and I go usually go to Festival two together. He he and I have a pact, John and I, that we see a new festival every year. And we and we Barry (28:40) Okay, there you go. That's cool. Trevin (28:42) and we haven't done it past two years. We kinda got got away from a pact, but we're we're looking at at one in Utah and and and the one out in San Francisco. You know, but they're just di different experiences for me, you know, different people to hang out with. David (28:59) And I'm already, just like Trevor said, I've already started looking when Louisville opens up. I've already started looking at hotels that are not opened up yet for that. I actually already booked a week for Lollapluza just as a fallback for next August. Sorry about that. And then Russ (29:14) Nice. David (29:15) may me I may try to do Summerfest again up in Milwaukee. Trevin's the one that kind of I think Trevin's my little lead man. He goes and tests them out and then toss them back to me. I go, I'll do that. Russ (29:24) Hahaha. David (29:26) 'cause Chris and I did we did Summerfest last summer and I that's a that's a well put on we just went one of the weekends up there, but the the grounds are built for a festival. I mean, it's all set bathrooms, restaurants. It's it's well done. We enjoyed it. Trevin (29:43) Yeah, it's a really under radar festival. I I'm not sure why David (29:45) Yeah, I agree. Trevin (29:46) why why it doesn't get much pub. But I've If you remember Barry when I well I went there, I was I always text Barry, of course, on these festivals, you know, and I'm I'm this is three years ago, I think, I went, maybe two. But that's that was a little bit different though. The headliner you have to pay you you have to buy an extra ticket for Summerfest. Barry (30:05) Okay. Trevin (30:06) But it's cheap. It's like I mean David (30:05) Yeah, so it's yeah, it's cheap. Russ (30:06) Interesting. Trevin (30:07) we w If you if you don't have to even spend money, you can like well okay, bring up a can of food, you get in, bring, you know, w something like that, but the at Summerfest is a little bit different in that the headliner, they have an arena there, but you have to buy an you have to buy a separate ticket. Barry (30:24) Well, my brother played with local band you would both remember Overland. They Trevin (30:30) yeah. Barry (30:30) did Summerfest back in the seventies. So I mean it's been around for a long, David (30:34) Yeah, that's good. Barry (30:34) long time. Yeah. Trevin (30:36) Yeah, it remi reminds me of of Riverband a lot. I mean except they d they do have modern bands though. But it's a it's like it's River Band on steroids. Is is is what Summerfest reminds me of. Barry (30:45) Yeah, it's probably one like one of the original American city fests that's that's still around. David (30:49) Yeah. And they've got pretty I mean, I s I saw Devo there and I was, you know, real close Russ (30:54) Hmm. David (30:55) for them. It's like I didn't pay hardly anything to see Devo. But then I turned around and saw him back at Shaky Knees just a little bit later on that thing. So Barry (31:07) Just because you guys do it so much, what what are your thoughts on the state of things right now? I mean, there's a lot of issues. The liquor, the revenue streams, we've talked about, weather continues to be a a topic. Is that does that enter your I I started to say radar and there's a bad pun? but I mean, is that something you worry about, you think about? Trevin (31:31) Yeah, it's very concerning, you know, for it's something something I enjoy doing. You know, I don't it's and I I'm I'm kind of a nerd, so I listen to the listen to these different, you know, podcasts and things on the inner workings of the business and things like that. Just just smile smile start hooked on to y'all's podcast 'cause I love I love how to learn how the sausage is made. That's so it's fascinating to me. But Ocean's Calling, I mean that's that got canceled. You know, and it was Ocean's Calling is a festival. If you're familiar with that one. It's it's in Mar on on the coast of Maryland and it was it was the same time as bourbon beyond. And it got canceled 'cause of weather. So you can't I mean this is and this like it's September 'cause it had the north northeaster come through. So yeah, I I'd be ver very hesitant to go to a camping festival at this point for lots of reasons, but just the whole you know, the weather would keep w would stay, okay, I want to be in a hotel, you know, just to make sure that I'm I'm safe and kinda kind of thing. But I mean th th not much we can do about it though, is there, Barry? I mean and rah, I mean there's not much what what Barry (32:36) No. Trevin (32:37) what are we gonna do except Barry (32:38) Just keep supporting them and hope they stick around. Trevin (32:40) Yeah. David (32:40) I mean, I've I've been evacuated from several, at least, you know, for a couple of hours, which is annoying as can be, especially with some of the misinformation that was going on. I think that's what happened the one well, maybe it was louder than life the week before that they had or maybe it was riot fest. They had everybody had left and they were told that the it was done for the night, but then they started playing again. So people were like kinda irritated. They had all gone all the way home and now they were had to come back. Russ (33:06) Yeah, that happened at Shaky Knees because as we were being evacuated, people were saying, it's done for the night. Don't bother coming back. And then, you know, of course, they announced, we're opening back up for 21 pilots, which was the headliner closing that night. yeah, difficult to kind of figure out what's Trevin (33:23) We Russ (33:24) going on all the time. Barry (33:24) Yeah. Trevin (33:25) even I don't know what's different 'cause like twenty fifth maybe maybe their the the risk tolerance is is really really low now. 'Cause I mean twenty fifteen off we Firefly shut down. Sarah Kings Leon was supposed to play and they shut they shut the festival grounds down at like like eight o'clock. They didn't cl we we still went back on Sunday. But it was it was it seems like now they just want they shut they just want to shut everything down. I'm I'm I'm not sure why. Barry (33:53) I don't know if it's that or I mean, seems like the timing of when it rains and the intensity is what's different. I know for Bonnarooo, you know, it has rained there in the past. It's rained many, many years, but it would either rain like the Tuesday before and it would just be wet, but you would still get it in, or it would rain Sunday when it was already done. You know, the two years when they canceled on Friday, it had rained for a month. leading up to it. So there was nothing that could be done in the the hurricane years before. again nothing could be done. so I I don't know. It we Yeah. We're recording this Trevin (34:35) definitely changed. Well w weather's definitely changed, that's for sure. I just you can't no one can argue with that. Barry (34:39) on Tuesday. Russ and I are going to Pelham an hour from here this weekend for CaveFest. And they're, you know, depending on which prediction there's a tropical storm coming up from the Gulf, so Trevin (34:53) my goodness, Pelham, Alabama? Barry (34:55) Yeah. Russ (34:56) Pelham, Tennessee. Barry (34:57) Pelham, Tennessee. Other side of Mount Eagle. Yeah. Trevin (34:58) Film t okay. Let's try KF Kfest. Okay. Yeah. But yeah, there's there's a hurricane going this weekend. I mean there really is. But Barry (35:04) Yeah. Yeah. Russ (35:05) Mm-hmm. Trevin (35:06) but but but you'll be but you'll be in a cave though, so you'll you'll be fine. David (35:09) Yeah, why do? Unless it floods. Barry (35:10) Yeah. Yeah. Fortunately for us it's closed. So I mean I'm I know Russ will go no matter what. I'm planning on it 'cause I'm really excited about it, been looking forward to it. But Russ (35:19) Yeah, weather doesn't bother me. Barry (35:21) yeah, but it is concerning. David (35:21) Well you at Bourbon Beyond, at Burbab Beyond, if it rained a lot though, 'cause most of its parking lots are like I said, they put the astroturp the con I don't think the it would not be that muddy, would you think, Trevin? Yeah, it I mean so it Trevin (35:32) What w would be money at all? There's no there's no David (35:35) c it could survive th once it rained, it's you'd be good to go. Trevin (35:38) Yeah, b I've been there, Russ (35:38) Mm-hmm. Trevin (35:39) I think my third and fourth year. It's never rained. That's kinda interesting. I was thinking about about that right now. We've never David (35:46) But Trevin (35:46) had rain. David (35:47) shaky knees a couple of years ago when Billy Idol was playing, it stormed like crazy right before Billy Idol played. And so all Russ (35:52) I remember that. Yeah. David (35:54) the all the fans that were in front of the stage all moved. And then the minute it the rain stopped, Christy and I, we went right up to it. We were right up on the front. Russ (36:01) Mm-hmm. David (36:02) You're standing in three inches of water, but hey, you're gonna see Billy Idol right in front of you. It was great. So Russ (36:05) That is yeah. David (36:07) I took advantage of that rainstorm. Barry (36:09) Yeah, that's kind of how we felt Sunday at at Bonnaroo this year. Already, buddy. What are you gonna do? Let's go enjoy the David (36:13) Yeah, it is what it is, yeah. Barry (36:16) let's go enjoy the show. Russ (36:16) Yeah, at some point you're not gonna get any more wet than you're already David (36:18) Mm-hmm. Russ (36:19) wet, so, you know, just Barry (36:20) Right. Russ (36:21) deal with it. Barry (36:22) Do you know about how many? I d I don't know if either of you sort of answered how many you might see next year. I mean you plan to, hope to. Trevin (36:29) Yeah, pro at least two. Maybe David (36:30) I'll probably shoot for two. Yeah. Trevin (36:33) three. I I'd like to go to Montreal again. what what a great city that is. It's one of those cities I just I can never can't believe I've never even been there before. But then and then yeah, it was Atlans in San Francisco. That's that's on my list next year. Russ (36:49) If you move back to Chattanooga, does that change how you choose which festivals to go to? Different geographic area? I I know you can just fly to most of them, but that does kind of open up different possibilities as far as festivals to attend. Trevin (37:04) It certainly would. I mean I th it doesn't open up too much, I guess. I mean I I'm I've the the festivals down in Florida would be would be cool to cool to attend as well once we Russ (37:12) Mm-hmm. Trevin (37:12) get back down south and things. but no, it's I mean it's not really you know, a buck bucketless item w would be, you know, like the ones over in Europe, you know, doing one of those. That doesn't matter where I live either. But I'd probably go to Bonnaroo, definitely, a lot once it starts up again a lot more being so close. David (37:32) Yeah, I never thought that Chattanooga was naturally central, but once you're away on the East Coast, it's not as convenient to go to some of the things that we had gone to before, that's for sure. I d I don't know if you know anything about there was the Festival of Loving Life that was up in Charlotte. They did like two years in a row. but for whatever reason it fizzled out too. And it was it was a a really good one too, right there in the heart of Charlotte. But Trevin (37:56) One one of my correspondent duties was I reported live from Lo from Love and Life, actually. Russ (38:02) Mm-hmm. Trevin (38:03) I did a podcast I did the recording this Sunday morning. The f the first the fur the first one. Yeah. Barry (38:07) Yeah, that's right. David (38:07) The first one. Okay. I thought it was well Russ (38:09) That's right. David (38:10) done, but it just fizzled. Now there's rumors that there's gonna be a rock festival here at Myrtle Beach in the works. It's kind of been it's Barry (38:18) There should be. David (38:18) being discussed. Russ (38:19) That makes sense, yeah. Barry (38:20) Alright, what's your best tip? Trevin (38:21) Just you know, planning, you know, I think that's one one thing is I was before before we started recording, I was telling st I got I got a bad blister on Thursday. Like, what the heck am I gonna do? And David's like, Well I have bullskin. I'm like, What? Yep. So that saved me, it really did. David (38:37) I have Trevin (38:39) But it's like it you can't you c you cannot you cannot plan enough. I mean, just Russ (38:40) Yeah. You can't be prepared enough. Trevin (38:44) you cannot be. That's that's that's the main issue. Just try to try no try to plan as much as possible. and And relax. I mean, d things things are gonna happen, you're gonna throw things off off kilter, but just you're you're David (38:57) Yeah. Trevin (38:58) there to enjoy yourself. David (38:59) That's how I look at it too. Just stay positive. People are gonna be idiots, but people are also gonna be nice too. You just gotta go with the flow. You just can't let little things bother you. you know, all this post bourbon beyond, there were so many complaints on some of the the pages and went, Did we go to the same festival? 'Cause I had a good time. I mean, it's it you you really have to just make the best of it. Russ (39:19) Same with Shaking Needs. Yeah, if you look at the subreddit after the festival, it's like people are saying, like, this was the worst weekend of my life. And I'm like, what, really? Yeah, it rained and we got evacuated, but I had a great time. It didn't change anything for me. Trevin (39:33) I I may not be the best person. I I I can't there has not been a single festival I've been to that I after it was over I thought that was terrible. It it it's it's never happened. I mean they have just there's Russ (39:42) Yeah. Yeah. Barry (39:44) Yeah. Trevin (39:44) bands I've seen like Counting Crows at Bird Beyond, they were they stunk. I mean, I can't tell you how bad they were. Yeah. David (39:48) We're bad. They were bad. Russ (39:50) Really? Trevin (39:53) I mean, I'm like, this is obviously just a paycheck for these people. And they had a great they had like a they were the pre they were before Mumford. Russ (40:01) Mm-hmm. Trevin (40:01) When they before Mumford or before Dave Dave Matthews. But anyway, they th they were right before they they were right before David (40:04) day matters, yeah. Note. Yeah. Trevin (40:08) it was there Saturday or Sunday. They were they had a great spot and they were just they but yeah, that but that one show is not gonna define my experience at at at at Bourbon and Beyond. Russ (40:16) Sure, yeah. You just go see another show, yeah. Trevin (40:20) Right. Barry (40:21) Let's dive a little deeper. You d you talk about planning. Dive a little deeper. Plan for n what do you mean? I mean you didn't bring moleskin, David did. Do you bring you talking about plan for all kinds of weather? You pack a kit, you got a bag you bring with you, do you get a locker? Wha what do you mean? Trevin (40:39) Yeah, so we're we're we're big on lockers. You know, Dave and I always, you know, split a locker and we bring Russ (40:44) I do like the lockers here. Trevin (40:45) yeah, that's that's key to me. bring a hoodie, bring a range act, even there's no way in the forecast and put it in your locker. bring a charger, put it in your locker, and things like that. But also even even planning beforehand who you're gonna see. So that way you're not like analysis of up paralysis, my I can this band, that band, that band. Go ahead and all these apps now, plan it out. You know, g I I was making fun of David. You know, he had a print he had a printout, which is I yeah, I think a look one of the stupidest things I've Russ (41:14) Yeah. David (41:14) That's how my brain works. Trevin (41:15) ever I was the stupidest thing I've ever seen in my life with him on this print out. Well, hey Dave, how about using this? I got it on my app here. Russ (41:22) Yeah, we David (41:23) But I that's how I plan. Russ (41:24) got Bryan Stone. He prints out everything too. So we're used to it. David (41:26) I did. I have to well, I have to draw arrows and then I have little codes when I'm lit. Do I put like a plus or two pluses? Means they've got higher priority over something that's competing with them. And then I draw my arrows and I know where I'm gonna go. Barry (41:38) Well, I've never traveled with David, but I know people who did when he was like team manager for a travel soccer team. And over planning was the word of the day from what I was it was like, you need David (41:50) I I have a folder. Trevin (41:51) Yeah. Barry (41:51) to be on the road by eight two and you need to be by this exit by this yeah. That's something you do like to do, isn't it? David (41:59) I have a folder for every trip I've ever made and I still have those folders. I s I I hold on to them. I've got, yeah, Russ (42:03) Yeah. David (42:06) I've got the Burb Beyond folder that had everything in it. Trevin (42:08) I mean, says enough that the dude had moleskin. I was like, it really 'cause I was I was legitimately like, my goodness. I mean th on Thursday, I it was huge I couldn't even probably w it was and that was okay, I'm I'm good. I couldn't run I couldn't run the five K Saturday morning, but which I signed up for, but besides that it it saved me. So Russ (42:28) So that's the best tip then. You don't have to bring everything, but bring David. Because David has everything. Trevin (42:32) Bring David. Yeah. David (42:33) Just using me. Barry (42:33) Yeah. David (42:35) I I have a checklist. I mean, Trevin make he was making fun of us before we went that I need to see the Dave Champion checklist. I said, I don't really don't want to show it to you, but there is a checklist. Trevin (42:44) I know there is. David (42:45) And the thing is the weather with the weather with this one, because it was, you know, 95 degrees the week before and it was gonna be in the 70s this week we were going. And you didn't know if it was gonna be so I mean we had I had shorts for every day, I had jeans for every day. I had a long sleep shirt. We just didn't know till we got there. Barry (43:01) I mean, Russ has that bus, so he's got all that stuff. He brings it with him pretty much every week. So you learn. I mean, you know what to have and not have. Russ (43:06) Yeah, that's just from years of these kind of trips. I know what to keep in the bus. So it's pretty much packed all the time. I don't have to sit there and think about what I need. It's already there. So that helps a lot. Trevin (43:20) We already talked about the music so much, but yeah, I think just just being out I just hope these festivals continue. You know, just being able to discover you know, I d l listen to all these all these rock and roll bands is just just made my made my week. So hopefully it continues. Barry (43:35) Well, who have you discovered? I mean, that's we sh you're right. We haven't talked a whole lot about the music, and I respect completely respect what you're saying about go to those early shows 'cause to me the discovery is the best part. Fine coming home with Russ (43:48) Mm-hmm. Barry (43:48) a new band I didn't know about, i it's a great weekend. David (43:50) One hundred percent. Yeah. Trevin (43:52) Yeah, yeah, for it like, you I mentioned Congress, the band and the Stews. Those are the two bands. Like, man, those guys are really it was a really good, David (43:56) I really like the stews. Yeah. Trevin (43:59) you know, but then also discovering old bands. Like I I like on Jet. I I kinda I kinda remember Jet. I Russ (44:04) Mm-hmm. Trevin (44:05) kinda I kinda remember David (44:05) Have worked. Trevin (44:06) Jet. And so we went and see Jet. I was like, my goodness, these guys Barry (44:10) Yeah. Trevin (44:10) rock, man. And just it was it was incredible it was an incredible show to watch Jet watch some band I kinda remembered in the stand there going, This is really, really good. David (44:21) I tell you, Squeeze, I thought Trevin (44:22) So David (44:22) Squeeze put on a great show. I love Squeeze what's Trevin (44:24) Sweeze there too, yeah. David (44:25) really, really good. I dragged Trevin to go see Haircut one hundred and he was like, Trevin (44:29) That was awful. David (44:30) I don't even know who this is. I went, No, you weren't you weren't into that. I was that that was my style back in the eighties. No, they were good. They were Trevin (44:33) I still know I still don't I still don't know I still know who they are. But I'm not David (44:38) good. Trevin (44:39) they're terrible. Russ (44:40) hahahaha David (44:41) No, they were they were good. I think he even told Trevin (44:44) I'm I'm going on subred I'm going on subreddit and gonna destroy so Russ (44:48) Worst band ever. Trevin (44:49) Worst band ever. David (44:50) I think I told Barry though I I did go see Adam Ant and he he was just dial he was just phoning it in. It was it was dull. I liked it I liked the song, but Barry (44:59) yeah, that's too bad. David (45:00) it w he was he was Russ (45:00) That's, yeah. David (45:01) not very energetic at all. Barry (45:03) Man, I was a huge Adam app fan. Russ (45:03) It's a little disappointing. Yeah. Trevin (45:05) That was too. David (45:05) Well I'm gonna reminisce just one real quick direct Trevor may not remember this, but when we were at Bonnarooo, we were actually watching it was Ed Helms at the Bluegrass stage that one time. And we listened Trevin (45:15) yeah. Mm-hmm. David (45:16) and at one point a guy behind in front of us, I think Trevor turned around and said, my gosh, I wanna be just like you guys when I'm your age, when I'm old. And I went, and that was ten years ago. And we're like, Well, thank you very much. Russ (45:28) Hahaha David (45:29) Yeah, yeah. So we were I mean 'cause it was late. It was late night. Yeah.
